Marketers get attached to tools, tactics, sites and cool new things. Sometimes those cool new things aren’t the best thing for your social media marketing strategy, but how do you know and what do you do if they aren’t? It’s pretty tough unless you put somethings into place like measurable goals, metrics and monitoring. You also have to have an open mind, to not get attached to tactics that are within your strategy.
Today’s 45 Social Media Insights In 45 Days features chapter 14 which is “Don’t Be Afraid to Throw Out What Isn’t Working” that’s in the book Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media. Today’s three insights that are covered in our video tips are:
- Monitor, Monitor, Monitor
- Measure
- If It Isn’t Working, Just Stop!

Chapter 14: Don’t Be Afraid to Throw Out What Isn’t Working Video Transcript
Hi I’m Liana Evans, author of Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media. Each day I highlight a chapter of this book in a series called 45 Social Media Insights In 45 Days which you can find on SMMarketingBook.com. This series supports the book and the site also supports the book, so you can find all different types of information along with the videos about the book at SMMarketingBook.com.
So with that lets get to it, we’ve got chapter 14 this time and its called “Don’t Be Afraid to Throw Out What’s Not Working“. The first tip I have for you with this chapter is to Monitor. “Monitor, Monitor, Monitor” and you need to keep on top of that because if you aren’t you’re not going to know whether or not what you are doing is working or not. So if you have some kind of campaign out there and you want people talking about you the only way you are going to be able to find out if that’s working is if you are using monitoring tools. That can be something as simple as Google Alerts or something on the enterprise level such as Alternian’s Techrigy, it was formerly called Techrigy, its now called SM2, or something like Radian 6.
The second tip I have for you in chapter 14 is to “Measure“. You need to measure whether this is working or not. If your goal is to get more buzz you need to have some kind of measurable goal about that. If you aren’t hitting those goals, if you aren’t hitting those measurements, those metrics and you aren’t following through on what’s going on with your strategy, how do you know if you are being successful or not. So this is why you need to measure. And if you aren’t hitting those goals, maybe you need to tweak somethig in your strategy or you need to stop doing it. That leads to tip number three.
Tip number three is “If It Isn’t Working, Just Stop“. Seriously just stop because you are going to be wasting your time, your valuable resources and your money if something isn’t working. You to either stop it or basically tweak whatever you are doing wrong to make it be doing something right.
So those are your three tips for chapter 14, Don’t Be Afraid to Throw Out What Isn’t Working, in the book Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media and that’s due out on Que Press on June 24th, 2010. You can find this video and other videos at SMMarketingBook.com. Well be back tomorrow with another video so stop on back and check it out.
