I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day Holiday if you were in the U.S., it’s a sign that Summer is just around the corner! We took the day off yesterday in the 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days series, so we’re picking up with Chapter 7, Bring Legal in Early, from the book Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media.
Everyone tends to cringe when they think about having to deal with their legal team. Either it’s because of money or its because they fear that the legal team is going to squash every idea they put forth. Keep in mind, your relationship with your legal team doesn’t have to be a dreadful one, actually it should be a helpful one.
Think of it this way, they can save you a lot more money if they help you out in the beginning, rather than having to pay them to help you out of a crisis situation someone on your social media marketing team created by saying something that they shouldn’t have (had legal told them not to in the first place). They can also be instrumental in finding ways around those sticky situations that will keep you from landing in a cauldron of hot boiling water.
There’s three tips highlighted in today’s video here on SMMarketingBook.com, but keep in mind, these are merely three tips, highlighting a chapter full of information about how to use your legal team in the most efficient manner to help your social media marketing strategy be successful.
- Teach Your Legal Team About Social Media
- Let Your Legal Team Know Your Goals
- Let Them Help You With Your Contingency Plans

Chapter 7: Bring Legal In Early Video Transcript
Hi I’m Li Evans an I’m author of Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media. You can find information about this book and the videos that are like this video at SMMarketingBook.com. The videos that you are seeing now are part of a series called 45 Social Media Insights in 45 Days, where I highlight a chapter of the book in 2 to 3 minutes so you can decide whether you want to buy the book or not, or you can just take the strategies and use them in your own social media strategy.
So today’s chapter that we’re taking a look at is Chapter 7 and it’s called “Bring Legal In Early“. This is really important. A lot of people think that legal is their enemy, or that legal’s there to bring them down and that’s not really true. Legal’s there to help you, especially if you get into really bad situations. Legal’s there to help you, so you need to use them wisely.
Tip number one in this chapter I have for you is “Teach Your Legal Team About Social Media“. A lot of times they are probably already engaging in social media in places like Facebook or Twitter and they’re just not thinking about the legal implications when it comes to marketing with your company. So teach them about social media.
The second thing you want to look at, the second tip that we have for this chapter is “Let Your Legal Team Know Your Goals“. The reason why you want to let them know your goals is because if you can’t do a certain thing and they know what your end goal is, they can help you find a work around in order to deal with that in order to hit your goal.
Tip number three, the final tip for today is “Let Them Help You With Your Contingency Plans“. So what if someone from your team says something that they shouldn’t have said? What happens? What happens if they say there is this coupon, then its no longer available, or they say we’re going to give something for free and you really can’t, or they let something go in a social forum that they really weren’t suppose to, and this causes a problem for your company? If you’re out there and you’re just planning it on your own, and not bringing in legal, you can find yourself in some sticky situations. Legal can help you plan those contingency plans with a little bit more solid footing in that you know what you can do and what you can’t do.
So those are your three tips for chapter 7, Bring Legal In Early in the book Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media. You can find this video and other videos at SMMarketingBook.com. I’m Li Evans and I’ll have some more videos for you, you’ll see another one tomorrow at SMMarketingBook.com.
