This weekend marks the start of summer! Parties, cookouts, celebrations, fun at the beach a lot of social activities and a lot of fun. I thought it would be appropriate to make today’s chapter highlight from Social Media Marketing:  Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media be chapter 41, In Order For It to Work, You Need to be Social.

Unless you are actively out in the social media communities actively engaging, sharing and conversing your social media marketing strategy is going to flounder and eventually fail.  Just like at any of the fun parties or things your going to be doing this weekend, unless you actively engage with other people, you aren’t going to have as great of a time as you could have if you “shared” your fun with others.  Today’s 3 high level tips for the 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days series are:

  1. Just Because You Built it Doesn’t Mean They Are Going to Come
  2. You Can’t Just Set It and Forget It
  3. Don’t Just Lurk

Chapter 31: In Order For It to Work, You Need to be Social Video Transcript

Hi I’m Liana Evans and I’m author of Social Media Marketing:  Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media.  I’m back with the 45 Social Media Insights in 45 Days which highlights a chapter each day in this book that’s coming out on June 24, 2010 on Que Press.  There’s a website that goes along with this book its SMMarketingBook.com and you can see this video and many other videos at the site and check out whether you want to buy the book or not.

So let’s get into it, we’ve got chapter 31, For It To Work,You Need to be Social.  In an social media strategy you need to be social.

Let’s take a look at tip number one, “Just Because You Built it Doesn’t Mean They Are Going to Come“.  That means that if you just build a Facebook page, or you build a Twitter list, or you put an ambassador community up doesn’t mean that people are just going to flock to it.  You really have to do engagement work and you have to build solid relationships in order for people to come and feel comfortable and trust enough that they will engage and share their stories with you there.   So just because you built it, doesn’t mean they are going to come, this isn’t a field of dreams.

Tip number two is “You Can’t Just Set It and Forget It“.  Wat I mean by that is you can’t just put up the Facebook page and think that people are going to come to it.  You can’t just put up a Twitter account and think that people are going to Tweet to you.  It doesn’t work that way, you actually have to be social.

The last tip I have for you is “Just Don’t Lurk“, that’s tip number there, don’t just lurk.  In a community you need to engage.  Now at first you may need to lurk, so you can learn what the norms are of the community (what you can do, what you can’t do) in order to make sure you are doing things right in the community. In order to get the most out of your social media strategy, and the engagement and to build those strong foundations, you need to actually engage with people you can’t just lurk and think that you are going to learn everything you can by just watching the people in the community.  You can learn a lot, but you aren’t going to learn everything.
