It may seem like simple stuff on the surface, you see a community, you see its name and you automatically think you know everything there is to about that community. Think again! There’s a lot that goes on behind closed doors (or IM’s) that you aren’t privy to until you become a part of the community and understand its members. Chapter 9: Understand Each Community Video Transcript
Hi I am Li Evans, and I am author of Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media, which is due out on Que Press on June 24, 2010. This is part of a series of videos that I am doing that will highlight different chapters in the book to help you to decide whether you want to buy it or not. Today’s chapter that we’re going to look at is chapter 9 and it’s called Understanding Each Community. This is a really important aspect of your social media tactics, engaging in social media and implementing your social media tactic that you need to understand how the communities operate.
The three high level tips that I want to give you for this particular video and this particular insight for this chapter is one, “Understand The Norms“. What that means is, understanding the unwritten rules that these communities operate by. What’s taboo in a community, what’s basically acceptable to do in a community? Those things you really need to understand because a lot of times you will not see those in “the rules” that you need to read and understand.
And that’s the next tip, “You Need to Read the Rules“. Each community has their own set of rules, whether its posted at the top called “Rules of the Road” or it’s “Read This First”. You should read these things because this can save you a lot of headache if you do something that you think is quite innocent, you might find yourself breaking the rules and out in the cold of that community.
The third tip I have for you is that “You Need to Stop, You Need to Listen, You Need to Learn Before You Open Your Mouth” in these communities. A lot of times people come into these communities just blazing like a know it all. You’re not going to get anywhere, you don’t build relationships that way. But if you stop and you understand what people find of value by listening, you can better create lasting relationships in these communities.
So that is your three high level tips for chapter 9, Understanding Each Community. Again, there’s a lot more information in this chapter about how you understand the norms, about what these rules are all about and some other high level bullets about how to understand these communities and use this in your social media strategy.
